Read MoreHillsborough County residents and non-residents who can verify taxable expenditures with receipts or other documentation will receive compensation equal to the amount of their Florida sales surtax payments. Alternatively, taxpayers who lived in Hillsborough County any time during 2019 to March 15, 2021, and either cannot or do not wish to provide proof of taxable purchases, can claim a standard award of up to $100 if they can establish their residency for some or all of the time the surtax was imposed. To receive a refund, eligible persons must submit a claim via Hillsborough County Surtax Settlement Program? by December 31, 2024.
During the 2024 legislative session, ?state lawmakers approved a plan for disposition of the Hillsborough transportation surtax collected between January 1, 2019, and March 15, 2021. The surtax was passed by Hillsborough County voters in 2018, and ruled unconstitutional by the Florida Supreme Court in 2021. The court signed an order providing for preliminary approval of the class action settlement. The hearing for the final approval of the settlement is scheduled for November 7, 2024.
